Dry Ice Helps Maintain Veterans' Memorial Stones

Like many other things, gravestones need maintenance, too. Pressure washing is very labor intensive and can erode old limestone markers which are softer than other materials such as granite. The process must leave little effect of cleaning residue on the grass lawn and other plantings.

The Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Jackson, Michigan, is using dry ice blasting to clean veterans' gravestones for Memorial Day. According to a news report, more than 300 stones in one corner of the cemetery are being cleaned with dry ice blasting just in time for a Memorial Day parade which passes near them.

The dry ice blasting process is often used to clean delicate architectural surfaces, removing dirt and corrosive dusts with a "green" cleanup. The pellets of dry ice are blasted against the surface to be cleaned with compressed air at a velocity chosen for the surface involved. The pellets sublimate to carbon dioxide gas when they hit the surface, so there are no cleaning substances to clean up after the cleaning.
